The Captain's Chair and Table A swivel chair and side table for distinguished country clubs around Asia; a playful twist on a classic early modern bar stool design. We were approached by the designer of this product, with a simple sketch, a budget, and a timeline. Thanks to our partners in manufacturing, we were able to turn around a quick feasibility assessment and secure the project timeline. Our product development team worked closely with the designer and two specialist factories to refine a series of pre-production schematics and a rapid prototype. Materials for the chair include grey stained ash hardwood, calf-skin leather, medium and light density foam, and powder-coated aluminum. Each was sourced and approved by MAKE/shift, with full chain of custody certification provided by the factories. Following a joint review of the prototype, a fully detailed proof-of-concept was made including a third revision of the drawings and a second fully detailed prototype. Through this process, MAKE/shift ensured continued engagement by the factories, and fast-tracked the production schedule. In less than four weeks, the chair went from a single sketch to full-scale production. Our production oversight team performed regular quality control checks at the factories from production to delivery. Ultimately, we are proud to safeguard our client’s success and to see the designer’s vision become reality. One hundred units of this chair have been sold and installed.
